Perceptual Linear Construct: A Fusion of Art and Smart Living

Zong Ying Chen's Award-Winning Design Marries Technology and Aesthetics

In the realm of modern living, the line between art and technology is increasingly blurred. Zong Ying Chen's Perceptual Linear Construct, a residential design inspired by the De Stijl artwork of Piet Mondrian, embodies this fusion. The design, which won Silver in the A' Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design Award in 2019, is a testament to the seamless integration of smart technology and artistic sensibility in creating a comfortable living environment.

The Perceptual Linear Construct is a residential design that stands out for its unique properties. The design is a play of lines and surfaces, creating a space that balances objectivity and subjectivity. The design's dichotomy of open and private, linearity and non-linearity, black and white, and light and darkness, articulates a rich and engaging space. The design's strength lies in its ability to bridge the interior and exterior, creating a comfortable environment that is both modern and timeless.

The design incorporates a smart management system, embedding sensors and WIFI above ceiling panels. It also features voice recognition at the entrance, lighting sensors upon entry, an anti-theft alarm, curtain, air-conditioning, lighting switches, a kitchen fire alarm, smart appliance control, and mobile device control and messaging via IoT technology. AI is also utilized to provide more assistance, creating a living style that may arrive in no time.

The Perceptual Linear Construct's realization technology is a discourse of dichotomy. The public and private domains are distinct, with the entrance, living room, dining room, and kitchen all regarded as part of the public domain. The private domain is off-limits to the external and the public, providing a personal sanctuary for solitude, music listening, reading, and sleeping.

The design's technical specifications are impressive. The interior area is 70 square meters, with a 4 square meter balcony. The public domain is regarded as a whole, enhancing the perceptual spatial freedom and broader experiences of carefree comfort. With a more flexible and recessive design, space usage can be of less hindrance, accommodating for visits by more families and friends.

The Perceptual Linear Construct was a project that started in January 2018 and was completed in July 2018 in New Taipei City, Taiwan. The design was a result of extensive research, with the extension, verticality, alignment, and the wooden texture of the ceiling, the folding undulation of the white satin curtain, accentuating how the line work of the wooden grille comes to manifest the richness in the spatial layering.

Despite the challenges faced in the design process, such as simplifying volumes to loosen up the spatial density, the design team managed to overcome these obstacles. The bookshelf behind the sofa was designed to optimize space utilization, and the book wall of the dining room was made of black metalwork painted to accommodate texts or murals left by all family members. The variation of the visual levels becomes a dynamic interplay of visual line work, content display, and functionality.

In conclusion, the Perceptual Linear Construct is a testament to the power of design in enhancing the quality of life. It is a design that not only embodies the fusion of art and technology but also serves as a model for future residential designs. The design's success is a testament to Zong Ying Chen's innovative approach and commitment to creating spaces that are both functional and aesthetically pleasing.
